Sunnyside is based in an Idyllic rural location and although in a rural part of Wales, we have a wide range of historic towns and renowned attractions on our doorstep.
There is plenty in the area to appeal to children young and old. The Playbarn on the outskirts of Brecon is ideal for younger children with a relaxing environment for parents to have a coffee and a snack. Cantref Adventure Farm is approximately 3 miles from Brecon with its variety of interesting animals, indoor soft play, drop slides, tractor and trailer trips and pony rides, as well as offering Pony Trekking. Quackers is another excellent indoor soft play and slides playbarn in Newbridge-on-Wye (between Builth Wells and Rhayader.)
Sunnyside Holiday Cottage is situated near the rural hamlet of Battle. We are 5.5miles from Brecon and 10 miles from Builth Wells.
This part of Powys is well known for the famous events that are hosted here - Brecon Jazz Festival, Hay Festival and the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells. Also the annual famous Bog Snorkeling and Man V Horse competitions are nearby in Llanwrtyd Wells. Both Brecon and Builth Wells are small, historical market towns with quaint little shops and cafes for you to explore. A successful Farmers' Market is held in Brecon on most Saturdays, where you can buy and savour many local produce. For those of you who enjoy a round of golf, there are golf courses in Brecon, Cradoc and Builth Wells. Cradoc Golf Club is only a 10 minute drive and has excellent facilities including a good restaurant.
Walkers on the Brecon Beacons
The Brecon Beacons Mountain range is a popular destination for all. With short hill walks for families and longer mountainous treks for adults, the Beacons provide endless chances for adventure and exercise. As the highest peak in southern Britain, Pen y Fan is a long climb but well worth it as you reach the summit. The views across the miles and miles of beautiful surrounding Wales are simply breathtaking.
Celebrity packed Hay Festival is a must at the end of May beginning of June, each year. With literary political and celebrity names both speaking and visiting the festival it has a buzzing and vibrant atmosphere.
Brecon Jazz is the musical equivalent to Hay's literary offerings. The streets of Brecon are alive with music of all genres, not just Jazz, during the beginning of august. Artists like Dionne Warwick and Jools Holland grace the stages of our local theatres providing Brecon with a magical musical air.
Things to do
We have outlined a small selection below to ensure your stay is as action packed or leisurely as you choose:
Walking & Horse Riding
The farm is in a beautiful Welsh hillside location, surrounded by bridle paths and rights of way for rambling, horse riding or just a leisurely stroll to take in the local wildlife. Mid Wales is a natural habitat for Red Kites, Buzzards, Otters and Red Foxes just to name a few. For keen outdoor adventurers, we are adjacent to beacon hill (with accessible bridal pathways and rights of way) and only a short distance from the Eppynt way walks. We are also a stones throw away form the Brecon Beacons and its fabulous waterfalls.
The Royal Welsh Showground
25 minutes drive, accessible via train and local bus services.
Based just outside of Builth Wells, The Royal Welsh Showground is not only the host for three key events in the rural calendar (The Royal Welsh Show, Spring Festival and Winter Fair), there are a number of other major events held at the prestigious location. These include dog shows, horse and livestock sales and a range of family events. The Showground also hosted the finish for the Mid Wales stage of the Tour of Britain (cycling) in September 2016.
Play Barn, Brecon
Complete with a 4 lane astro slide, the play barn is quickly developing a reputation as one of the popular children's play centre in Mid Wales. Perfect to let your children let off some steam should the weather be inclement, allowing you to relax with a coffee or even join in while they play.
