The Brecon Beacons National Park boasts eight golf courses in and around the area.

The Brecon Beacons is very well located for golfers to come and discover this part of Wales.

Cradoc, centrally located just north of Brecon is one of Wales’ newest golf clubs but it has wasted no time in rising to a position of some prominence in the game since being founded in 1967.

It was voted Welsh Golf Club of the Year in 2005 and it is easy to see why with excellent practice facilities and a warm welcome to compliment the course which nestles at the foot of the beacons

Players do not want to be fooled by Cradoc’s 6,188-yard parkland lay-out, which appears benign at first glance.

Viewers of Sky Sports will already be familiar with the short third hole, which was used as part of Golf in Wales’ television advertising campaign, while the par four 451-yard sixth hole will test the best of players with a pinpoint approach required to find a small target with out of bounds at the back. Not surprisingly, it is stroke index one on the card.

Golfing journalist Andy Griffin states 'My personal favourites were the newly-designed seventh and eighth holes and the testing finish that awaits golfers over the final three holes.

The par-three seventh may only measure 137 yards off the white tees but demands an accurate strike to find a tricky two-tiered green with plenty of subtle borrows, while the 287-yard par four offers the dilemma of going for the green in one but face the consequences, or play safe and lay up.

Cradoc’s closing holes are guaranteed to test a player to the limit and anyone who can muster a four, three, four finish will know that they have played well.

It’s an often-used cliché but it really does sort the men from the boys and it’s little wonder the course has a reputation for producing golfers of the highest quality.'

On the edge of the town itself lies one of Wales’ nine-hole gems. None other than legendary designer James Braid laid out the Brecon Golf Club, which unfolds alongside the river Usk.

Brecon’s parkland course, which dates back to 1902, features Braid’s trademark bunkers and boasts stunning mountain scenery views

Golf in Wales is about the pleasure principle. Ian Woosnam underlines this particular Welsh attitude by saying,

“There is more to golf than playing. Our clubhouses share a special talent for hospitality. Uplifted noses are not encouraged. We specialise more in laughter and banter. Wales - golf as it should be.”
