Attractions Brecon Cathedral & Heritage Centre

Come visit Wales' finest cathedral

The Cathedral and its attendant buildings, formerly a Benedictine Priory under the control of Battle Abbey in Sussex, are amongst the most important architecturally in Wales.

Brecon Cathedral has been the site of Christian worship for more than a thousand years, dating from the days of the Norman conquest.

In 1093 a Benedictine Priory linked to Battle Abbey was established here and continued in existence until the dissolution of the monastries in 1537.

The building then served the community as a Parish Church, and in 1923 became the Cathedral Church of the newly founded Diocese of Swansea & Brecon.

The Cathedral Close houses a Heritage Centre
which makes use of an important redundant 17th Century listed building, formerly a Tithebarn.

The Centre includes an interpretative exhibition, a restaurant, a shop and an herb garden. The Exhibition makes use of the latest technology in telling the story of Brecon Priory from its 1093AD beginnings to its present use. There are a series of elegant display panels dealing with the architectural changes over the years, a series of voice cones about people from the past, and 7 audio-visual vignettes of some of today's people (e.g. the present Bishop, the Organist and the Verger) who have something to say about the way the Cathedral works.

There is also a range of artefacts, including five life-size replica bells housed in the original 15th Century bell-frame that has been brought down from the Cathedral Tower. There are other features including a specially constructed model of the Cathedral suspended from the ceiling over a table mirror, and some interactive effects.

There are usually free lunchtime recitals at 1pm on the first Monday of the month.

On Sundays Evensong is sung in the Cathedral at 3.30 pm.

On Fridays it is sung at 5.45 pm.
